Man arrested after armed siege at Consett home

Police have arrested a 52-year-old man after an armed-police stand-off at a Castleside home
An elderly woman was led to safety after an armed-police stand-off at a Consett home.
Police were called just after 2.30pm this afternoon to an incident on Front Street in Castleside.
Officers attended and after becoming concerned for the occupants of the house armed response units and dog handlers were deployed.

The A68 was closed in both directions from Hillcrest to the crossroads.
A 78-year-old woman was led to safety, at just before 5pm and a 52-year-old man was arrested for firearms offences and is currently in police custody.
Police are tonight searching the property.
Supt Kerrin Smith, of Durham Police, said: “This incident was dealt with quickly and in a co-ordinated and controlled manner and at no point were any members of the public at risk. Officers are currently at the scene and the road will reopen in due course.”
“I would like to once again reassure the community of Castleside that this was an isolated incident, the two people involved are thought to be known to each other and there is no need for anyone to be alarmed.
