Is Arsene Wenger brave enough to drop Wilshere?
Arsene Wenger needs to realise that Jack Wilshere doesn't fall in to his tactics this season
Arsenal have had an up and down start to the season this year.
A 3-1 opening day loss to Aston Villa highlighted some major flaws in the squad whilst a convincing win against Fenerbahce in the Champions League showed their class and a 1-0 win against Tottenham, their resilience.
Needless to say, no one knows how good Arsenal are at the moment. Some, including Jose Mourinho, consider them title challengers whilst others don't think they'll make the top four.
Wilshere has been lauded as the lone star in a new generation of average England players. He is predicted to be the captain for club and country, taking on the world with his silky skills.
But a lack of playing time and worries over his fitness has obviously prevented Wilshere from playing his best football.
So far this season, Arsenal's midfield three has been made up of Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla representing a highly attacking trio.
Although proving to be great going forward, the lack of a defensive-minded midfielder was exposed by Aston Villa.
Once Mikel Arteta recovers from injury, he should be welcomed back in to the team. But there lies Arsene Wenger's problem.
The fans love Wilshere, but there is no denying that his team mate Ramsey has outperformed him so far.
With three goals in the Champions League qualifiers, as well as influential performances in Arsenal's two Premier League wins, Ramsey has been Arsenal's best player this season.
As for Wilshere, although no one can fault his effort, he has seemed off the pace and isn't contributing enough.
There are still nerves over his injury-prone ankles. 60,000 hearts drop in the Emirates every time he goes down. Strong tackles are met with anger from Wilshere and fans alike and he isn't committing himself to challenges the way he did in seasons past.
Everyone expects the 21-year-old's place in the side to be guaranteed. He is Arsenal's golden boy. By coming through the ranks and giving his all for the club, fans are prone to back him all the way.
But the fact is that, tactically, he is not needed. Arsenal need a defensive midfielder like Arteta to come back in to the squad and Ramsey is simply playing too well to be dropped.
Against Tottenham, Arsenal looked frail when Wilshere was on the pitch. With the introduction of anchorman Mathieu Flamini in exchange, a gaping hole in midfield was plugged and Spurs failed to create any chance of note from open play.
With concerns over his long term fitness, it could be good for him as well as Arsenal to play WIlshere primarily from the bench this season.
