Aregbesola, PDP trade words over achievements

Osun State Governor, Mr.  Rauf Aregbesola, and the Peoples Democratic Party in the state are in a fresh war of words over the achievements of the current administration.
The governor, in a statement on Sunday by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, said his administration had done so well and the only option available to the PDP  was to embark on a campaign of calumny against him.
But the Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Bola Ajao, described the achievements of the administration as imaginary ones.
Aregbesola, however, urged the people of the state to be wary of the “lies from the PDP” as the state began preparations for governorship election coming up later this year.
He said,  “We are compelled to alert our people in the state at this time that ahead of the 2014 governorship election, the only thing that will be left for the PDP is its leaders’ desperate bid to gain power, lord it over our people and further sharpen their capacity to lie brazenly.

Rivers: Presidency, APC in war of words

The Presidency and the All Progressives Congress on Sunday engaged in a war of words over the lingering political crisis in Rivers State.
The APC had in a statement by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, accused the Presidency of direct involvement in the crisis.
However, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, said it was the APC that was to be blamed for instigating the crisis to give an impression that the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Ameachi, was still popular among the people.

FG to upgrade power transmission network with $1.5bn

The Federal Government on Sunday said that $1.5bn (N240bn) had been mobilised from various sources for the upgrade of power transmission network in 2014 and beyond.
The government also stated that it would set up a development financial institution to provide medium and long term financing for industrialists and entreprenuers.

FG to curb medical trips – Minister

Worried by capital flight from Nigeria as a result of political office holders’ penchant for medical treatment in foreign countries, President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered more stringent approvals for such medical trips.
Making the disclosure in Benin, Edo State, on Saturday, Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said President Jonathan had directed the minister to authorise such trips, henceforth.
Expressing concern over the increasing number of Nigerians detained in Indian hospitals and those of other countries on account of their inability to pay their medical bills, the minister said his office was being bombarded daily with letters of assistance.

‘Amosun planning to disrupt APC rally’

The All Progressives Congress federal lawmakers from Ogun State on Sunday raised the alarm over an alleged plan by Governor Ibikunle Amosun to use thugs to disrupt the party’s rally scheduled for Tuesday and turn round to blame it on them.
Three senators, including Gbenga Kaka (Ogun East), Gbenga Obadara (Ogun Central) and Akin Odunsi (Ogun West) and the seven members of the House of Representatives, in a joint statement made available to newsmen in Abeokuta on Sunday, alleged that the governor planned to use his supporters to disrupt the APC rally slated for Tuesday and turn round to accuse them of carrying out a reprisal over Thursday’s shooting incident in Wasimi.

Sad News: Wole Soyinka's daughter, Iyetade Soyinka Dies at 48






According to statements by SaharaReporters, Iyetade Soyinka, a daughter of Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, has died. Ms. Soyinka, who was born June 6, 1965, died at the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital where she was being treated for an undisclosed ailment.

The death was disclosed in a statement signed by Jahman Anikulapo, an aide to Mr. Soyinka, one of the world’s foremost dramatists and winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in literature. The statement noted that the late Iyetade Soyinka was a student at the Staff School and Queens School, Ibadan before she studied Medicine at the University of Ibadan.

Mr. Anikulapo’s statement described the deceased as “affable, intelligent and sometimes capricious,” adding that she “struggled with her health in recent years.” Despite her health woes, the late Iyetade Soyinka “greeted every day with a smile and doted on her two children.

She has also dropped her Muslim name Hawa, and now bears Victoria. Sources say the change happened shortly after Tundun and Atama went their separate ways.
