Manchester United must appoint Sir Alex as director of football

Sir Alex Ferguson is the perfect candidate for Manchester United's director of football role at Old Trafford

Manchester United's transfer market troubles could be easily solved with the swift appointment of former manager Sir Alex Ferguson as director of football.
Much has been said about the club's difficult summer, during which time the reigning Premier League champions missed out on numerous targets, before finally completing the underwhelming deadline day signing of Marouane Fellaini from Everton.
High-profile names such as Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas, Sami Khedira and Ander Herrera all slipped through the net, and they also failed with bids to bring Leighton Baines and Fabio Coentrao to Old Trafford.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Manchester United ended up paying the Toffees an inflated £27.5million for their only major signing; £4million more than the price the Belgian midfielder was actually available for only a month earlier, due to a release-clause written into his contract, which expired on July 31.
To make matters worse, every time a prospective deal collapsed over the summer, the club's scattergun approach to business was made public - something that rarely happened under the Ferguson regime.
The Manchester United of old wouldn't have struggled to get deals done for those players, and they certainly wouldn't have waited until the very last minute before entering into negotiations, and rushing through business at the eleventh hour.
David Moyes has come into criticism for Manchester United's recent transfer failings, and there have already been calls for new chief executive Edward Woodward to tender his resignation, following the disastrous player recruitment drive in the build-up to the 2013/14 campaign.
Neither can be held solely responsible.
David Gill's departure in June, which coincided with Ferguson's retirement at the end of last season, has had a much bigger impact on the club than perhaps was first predicted, prompting demands for a reshape of the Manchester United board, with the appointment of a director of football highlighted as a measure to help ease the pressure on both Moyes and Woodward.
A director of football is commonplace at clubs around the rest of Europe, but Premier League sides have been reluctant to move away from the more traditional set-up, although the role is starting to be embraced in England, following the recent success of a number of continental pioneers.
It's no coincidence that Franco Baldini's arrival at White Hart Lane has coincided with Tottenham Hotspur's successful acquisition of no less than seven summer signings, all of which are highly regarded around Europe, and will help soften the blow from the departure of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
Former Barcelona director Txiki Begiristain has also played an instrumental part in Manuel Pellegrini's summer signings, helping the former Malaga coach get the majority of his business done by the middle of July, having only been announced as Manchester City manager a month earlier.
Manchester United's reluctance to bring in a director of football could see them miss out on more signings in the future, and potentially damage the club's reputation as a major player, both domestically and in Europe.
Moyes can't be given the same all-encompassing power that was enjoyed by his predecessor. In fact, club officials should move hell-and-high-water to convince Ferguson to take up a more hands-on role than his current ambassadorial duty, to help his replacement oversee transfers.
His perpetual pulling-power would be influential in the recruitment of marquee signings moving forward. And anyway, it wouldn't be the first time that a Manchester United legend has come out of retirement to rescue the club at its greatest time of need.

PDP Elders fail to unite warring factions; Obasanjo admits party on verge of collapse

Efforts by elders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to broker peace in the lingering crisis of the party has hit a brick-wall again.
The elders led by former President, Olusegun Obasanjo met with the two factions separately at Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja.
Other members of the troubleshooting group that attended were former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, and two former PDP National Chairmen, Senators Banabas Gemade and Ahmadu Alli.
DailyPost gathered that there was a joint meeting with the two groups before they were separated to hear their personal grievances.
While the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP stayed in Benue Hall, the Kawu Baraje New PDP was at the Kaduna Hall.
The Obasanjo-led elders were seen shuttling between the two locations throughout the five hours duration of the meeting.
Tukur attended the meeting in company of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom and Jonah Jang of Plateau, along with Henry Akitoye, the acting national secretary of the Tukur faction.
Baraje was accompanied by Governors Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers.
The elders were said to have pleaded to both parties to give peace a chance in the interest of the party.
In a chat with journalists after the meetings, Obasanjo said: “I thank you for exercising patience. You have seen five of us. As selected elders of the party, we have taken it upon ourselves to prevent the worst from happening to our party.
“Two of us, (Solomon) Lar and (Alex) Ekwueme are abroad and could not join us but we are carrying them along. But suffice to say that there is family dispute within the PDP which we want to stem the tide of and prevent our party from going to the brink.
“And I want to say that we have met with the two sides of the family. We have listened to them and of course, we are going to put our heads together and go on from there.”
The Baraje faction was said to have gone straight to the venue of the planned secretariat after the Transcorp talks.
Baraje and Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, drove parallel secretariat of locate at Number 4, Oyi River Crescent, Maitama.
The two-storey building secretariat has Plot number 3206A.
The signboard placed on the side of the building was covered, but the gate had the PDP colour of green, white and red. Renovation work is still ongoing at the building.
Meanwhile, Kano state governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has stated that governors under the new PDP were considering leaving the party.
In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, he said: We are still members of PDP but if the party fails to resolve the ongoing crisis, we have different options one of which is to declare for another party.
“If the leaders are careful enough in their handling of the situation, there will be peaceful resolution, but if we find out that they are trying to be mischievous, we will have no problem in joining the APC, after all, they are our stalwarts and are our people.”
Six other governors in the New PDP are Amaechi, Wamakko, Lamido, Muazu Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa) and Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara).

Muslim faithful storm Lagos over alleged image of dead Imam

Muslim faithful have not stopped trooping to the popular Alfa Shehu mosque, at Owode-Onirin, along Ikorodu road, Lagos State, where they claimed to have seen the image of Sheik Ibrahim Niyyas, Sheik Hamad Tijhani and Shehu Bulala, on the walls of the mosque and other houses around the Mosque.
It is now four days since the apparitions purportedly appeared on the walls, yet people have continued to troop to the place unceasingly. DailyPost gathered that the images had appeared a few days to Ramadan fasting period, however, the Imam of the Mosque, Alhaji Shehu Nurudeen, warned his son not to disclose the development to anyone as it would be difficult for anyone to believe such news. The apparition had remained secret until a man (name withheld), went there from Apapa area of Lagos State on Tuesday morning, confirming that he was told by Allah about the incident.
The Imam’s son, Ibrahim Nurudeen had told journalists that people started trooping into the place after the stranger visited the Mosque.
“When we were about rounding off the fast, my dad saw the image on the wall inside the mosque but he warned us against publicising it because people may not believe. We were however surprised on Tuesday morning when a man whom we had not seen before, came around to say that he got a revelation about Sheik Niyyas, Tijhani and Bulala, appearing on the wall.
“Before we could address the issue, people had started trooping in from various parts of the country to see what was happening here. My dad had to leave the house since people started coming to confirm for themselves. I’m not surprised at the way people have been coming because those people who appear on the walls are our legends in Islam,” he said.
One Islamic cleric, Jamiu Afeez, in confirmation of the development said that the images were looking so real at the early stage but with people’s continuous attempt to touch them made them to disappear.
The cleric confirmed that people visit the Mosque from all parts of the country.
•Muslim-faithful-this-morning-at-the-mosque-where-an-apparition-was-seen-448x336“The images were looking so real initially but the more people touched them, the more they disappeared. We had to call mobile policemen and soldiers to help us control the crowd here yesterday because people have not stopped coming.
“We have been praying here since that Tuesday morning, day and night because it is a revelation from God and a clear indication that our prayers have been answered. The more we prayed, the more the Sheiks appeared. People have come in from Ilorin, Offa and other parts of the country to see for themselves,” he explained.
Sheik Niyyas, one of those appearing on the walls was a popular Islamic cleric who had lived from 1900 to 1975. He was born in Senegal, and till today, he is been worshipped by some Muslim faithful.

ASUU strike: We will shut down private universities – Students threaten

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has vowed to shutdown private universities if the ongoing strike persists.
The students threatened yesterday during a protest in Ado- Ekiti against the protracted strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
The group, who carried placards with different inscriptions such as: We are tired FG, ASUU, Our leaders are heartless, FG save our career, etc, condemned the Federal Government’s stance and vowed to force private universities across the country to shutdown if the government fails to agree to the demands of the striking lecturers.
NANS also threatened to storm the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to press home their demands.
While lamenting that they are tired of staying at home, the visibly angry students blasted President Goodluck Jonathan over its failure to honour the agreement it had with ASUU.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Comrade Asafon Sunday, who is the Director of Action and Mobilization of NANS, South -west, zone, said “Between 2000 and 2011, government earned about N48.48 trillion from the sale of oil alone, against N3.10 trillion earned between 1979 and 1999.The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in 2012 financial year alone accrued a sum of N5.12 trillion as revenue generated from tax paid by the masses. With this upsurge in the revenue at the disposal of the Nigerian government, one would have expected such to translate to commensurate improvement in the quality of public education as well as other social services.”

PDP will be history in a few months time – APC

The All Progressive Congress, APC, has described the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as a party living in self –denial, saying that in no distant time, the acclaimed largest party in Africa will become history.
Interim National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who also said the party was not the brain behind PDP’s woes, noted that ongoing cracks in the ruling party was an accident waiting to happen.
Mohammed in an interview with Punch said, “While we cannot be held responsible for the implosion in the PDP as it was an accident waiting to happen, we are not unhappy that finally by this implosion, Nigeria is on the path of redemption.
“As to whether the seven dissenting governors are ACN moles, our position is that we shall welcome them with open arms into the APC.
“If President Jonathan and the PDP cannot manage success, we will demonstrate to them and Nigerians how we can optimise the experience and competence of these dissenting PDP governors for the benefit of Nigerians.
“The truth of the matter is that PDP is living in self -denial. In a few months time, PDP will be history. And by the way, there are today not just seven dissenting governors.
“The number of dissenting governors is probably today more than those with Bamanga Tukur.
Similary, the Director of Communication/ Media Advisor to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Movement, Alaba Yusuf distant the party from the crisis rocking the PDP.
According to him, “The PDM is barely three weeks old. The PDM as a party cannot be working towards the disintegration of any other party, least of all, the PDP which has been on ground for the past 14 years.
“What is happening in the PDP is its internal affair; we are out to provide Nigerians with a better alternative.
“The beauty of democracy is the provision of choice. We are not into blame game. We don’t want to be drawn into a controversy that we have nothing to do with.
“We are now too busy with the registration of our members nationwide and we want Nigeria to be a better place for all.
“So, if people say a party is not doing well, they look for a credible alternative which the Peoples Democratic Movement is providing.
“We as a party are not happy about the poor state of our education, we are not happy about our dwindling economy, we are not happy about the lack of employment just like other Nigerians. We have no hand in the internal crisis of the PD

Keshi, Amaju Have No Hand In Mba’s Transfer – Etu

By: Adeyemi Robinson-Adefioye on September 7, 2013 - 1:56am
The attention of the Management of Warri Wolves has been drawn to a report that the Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi and the Executive Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission, Pinnick Amaju made it impossible for the transfer of Sunday Mba to scale through.
According to the media officer of the Warri Wolves, Moses Etu, they are not really surprised by this unfounded story making the rounds because they knew this will come from some desperate people who were hell bent on benefiting from the deal when in actual fact, they have nothing to do with Warri Wolves Football Club and Super Eagles player, Sunday Mba.
“It is no longer news that the so called Soccer Ambassador whom we believe is behind this allegation has been working with some people in Enugu to thwart all our efforts at making sure Sunday Mba gets what befits him”.
Etu said they are saying boldly that Coach Stephen Keshi has nothing to do with the transfer of Mba and the Super Eagles gaffer has no hand in the botched move of Sunday Mba to C.A.Bastia and as for Mr Pinnick Amaju, he is not on the board of Warri Wolves even though they report to him as the Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission just the way all state clubs report to their Commissioner for Sports.
Etu further stressed that they made it known that Emmanuel Ibru is their consultant duly hired to work for the Club and they could attest to it that knowing the type of family he comes from and his antecedent, he would never be involved in anything fraudulent.
He, therefore, enjoined the public to be cautious of those peddling rumours and to contact Warri Wolves for any concrete information not only on Sunday Mba, but any other player.
“It is our candid opinion that these set of people will be disappointed when Sunday Mba finally leaves the shores of this land to begin a career abroad as he is destined to be great no matter the plans of this set of people.
“It is very unfortunate that some people could so be desperate to want to do things that they cannot. It is an open secret that a certain soccer ambassador has been working with some unscrupulous elements in Enugu to reap where they did not sow and now that they cannot achieve their aims, they want to tarnish the well built image of Mr Pinnick Amaju who has done much to develop the round leather game.
“It is even funnier that they are dragging the name of Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi to it, all in a bid to destroy the cordial relationship between him and Sunday Mba. We know that they have failed and will continue to fail as we know their antecedent”.Said Etu.
