Anambra Government will spend N12.5bn to make education sector attractive – Obi

Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra on Tuesday said the state government would spend N12.5 billion to make education sector more attractive before the end of his tenure.
Obi, who presented the cheques in Awka, said that it was part of the government’s “final push’’ in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to further develop the state.
“The system must change. The children are the future leaders we have and you, the teachers are paying a prize now to train the children of other people, God will do the same to you,’’ he said.
According to him, N5 billion each will be spent on each of the eight MDGs programmes in order to ensure a secure future for the children of the state.
He said that the state government would employ 4, 000 teachers, 2,000 each for primary and secondary schools as well as 2, 000 civil servants before the end of 2013.
Obi added that a separate account had been opened for the payment of the 6,000 would-be workers till December, 2015.
The governor also gave out N1.94 billion cheque to the public primary schools for the provision of instructional materials and infrastructure in the state.
Obi also said N1.5 billion would be injected into agriculture, while 510 primary and secondary schools across the state would receive a bus each.
According to him, government will provide each nursing school with N200 million while seven new fire fighting trucks and stations will be provided for new areas.
“We are giving the cheque today because we know that education sector drive and make things better for us because we want Anambra to work,” Obi said.
He also donated a bus to the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria, Anambra chapter, and also pledged to take 21 best headmasters or headmistresses, one from each of local government.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Mr Olisa Nzemeka, commended the governor for the gesture and assured that the money would be judiciously spent.
“It’s been so well with us from this administration, especially in the provision of infrastructural development of schools in the state,’’ he said.
In his remarks, the National Chairman, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, praised Obi for his prudence in managing state funds.
He said the state had had it so well from the APGA government, stressing that Obi had released over three billion naira in the last two days for the development of primary schools.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Uju Okeke, commended the governor for the gesture and said that school pupils had been performing well in national examinations.
Okeke urged parents, traditional rulers, presidents-general of communities and other stakeholders to visit schools and monitor how the monies were spent with a view to giving reports where necessary.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Mrs Azuka Enemo, who also spoke, emphasised that Obi gave schools to mission to revitalise and inculcate moral values in children.
“As a result of his visionary leadership, the governor identified education as a solution to the social vices that had hitherto bewildered our society.
“He has been able to improve our education sector, and I urge you people to support continuity by electing a responsible successor,’’ Enemo said. (NAN)

40 Soldiers Killed, 65 Missing in a 'Surprise' Attack by Boko Haram Fighters

No fewer than 40 Nigerian soldiers were killed and the whereabouts of 65 others were unknown in a deadly assault by suspected Boko Haram members in the sect’s stronghold in Borno state.
Various defence sources conveyed the information to PREMIUM TIMES, adding that the army authorities are outraged by the insurgents’ strike, and have ordered an investigation into the suspected operation blunder that gave the militants such an upper hand. The commanding officer of the unit that carried out the operation has now been removed from his post, officials say.
The casualty, one of the heaviest for the military in its campaign against the militant group in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, occurred along the Baga – Maiduguri road on Friday, September 13, 2013. Presumably it happened due to a ‘classic’ case operational and communication failure.
A detachment of soldiers under the 134 Battalion of the 12 Brigade under the Multi National Joint Task Force, MNJTF, stationed in Kangarwa village in Kukawa local government, had conducted a reconnaissance to gather intelligence around the area, during which they established the presence of previously unnoticed Boko Haram camps.
The soldiers returned to their base and filed a report recommending aerial bombardment of the area, preparatory for a ground operation by troops. But that plan was cancelled at the final minutes by an unnamed top official without formal communication to the more than 100 troops that had already advanced on the area. So the soldiers rushed to the terrorists’ stronghold without knowing that the aerial bombardment had been cancelled.
The soldiers were trapped in the ambush under heavy fire from the militants who had surrounded the area, leaving at least 40 soldiers killed. Some 65 others have remained missing. The insurgents were able to recover a huge cache of weapons from the deceased and run-away soldiers.
As with past failures that ended in bloodshed and heavy casualty against the military, authorities have struggled to place a lid on the incident.

But a top security source confirmed the incident and said the army headquarters have ordered an investigation.
The recent attack came less than two months after a similar miscalculation on August 4 which also resulted in a heavy casualty following a similar surprise attack by Boko Haram on a camp at Malam Fatori.

Phyno’s ‘Man Of The Year’ & Maleek Berry’s ‘The Matter’ Banned By NBC?

According to Gbemi, a popular radio personality on 99.9 The Beat FM Lagos, NBC has instructed them not to play 2 of the most popular songs of the past year, Maleek Berry’s The Matter and Phyno’s Man Of The Year. Reasons why this instruction was passed down is not 100% clear but it seems like it has to do with the content of the songs.
Artistes pls censor your songs . Take the time to make a radio edit if you want it played on radio. NBC is breathing down our necks

It wont be the first time, a very popular song has been banned from radio airplay or video airplay. Femi Kuti’s award winning Bang Bang Bang was banned in Nigeria, as well as Dbanj’s Suddenly, D’Prince’s Take Banana, Wande Coal’s Go Low video and a host of others have seen the ax of NBC.
Sooner or later there will have to be some compromise and maybe more uncensored versions of hit songs with “questionable” lyrics or content. As of right now though, we’ll await official word from NBC as to what the confirmed instructions are.
